Improvements

10/19/2014

This week signified the start of second quarter. There are many mistakes that I made last quarter that I would like to improve on or learn more about. These include shooting better b-roll, making my video shorter, and creating an opening.

Last quarter, our project was about the Rose-Ringed Parakeet, so I go a lot of b-roll of the parakeets. I never used repeating shots in my project, but because some of the shots looked similar, some people thought that I did. So the first thing that I need to improve on is to film a variety of different shots. I also need to improve the quality of my b-roll shots. Some of my shots were out of focus and a lot of them were a little dark, because the birds came out around dusk.

Our video was also way too long. I often make my quarter project too long because I just want to cram as much information as I can into my video. You get your grade docked a little bit if your video is too long, so keeping it under three minutes is kind of important. It is not easy to shorten your video and it takes a lot of time, which I did not have very much of because our final interview was filmed the day before the entire project was due.

Something that I would like to learn is how to make an opening. Because the announcements are different this year, we have to make new openings. I have to learn soon because I signed up for the Halloween opening, which has to be done soon because Halloween is just around the corner. I probably just go ask Kaden, another student in the class. He already made his and it looked pretty cool.

There are a few things that I would like to improve on or learn how to do in general. These include shooting better b-roll, making the video meet the time limit, and learning how to make an opening. If I improve these things, then this quarter can be a lot better than the last one.

Ben, in my opinion, the biggest thing you need to work on is the effort you put in to your work. Often times this quarter, you gave just the bare minimum of effort and that really hurt you. You're an intelligent student but your work doesn't reflect that. You hear me say all the time, "Go from good to great" but sometimes the effort you give me isn't even good. You are capable of so much more! Show the new students what a hard working 8th grader looks like! You can do it!
